The Criminal Investigations Unit (CIU), often referred to as the Detective Bureau, currently consists of three officers assigned as detectives. Detective Michael Moraglia and Detective Charles Jones currently operate the CIU. Lieutenant Brian Walker, is the commander of the CIU.
The CIU is responsible for a multitude of duties. First and foremost, detectives assigned to this unit are responsible for investigating all significant criminal incidents that occur in the township. Such incidents consist of unattended deaths, robberies, assaults, sexual assaults, burglaries, overdoses, serious motor vehicle crashes, and many others. Detectives are also assigned to special investigations by the Lumberton Twp. Police Administration when necessary. A critical component of the CIU is the processing of documents, evidence, reports, and supporting documentation, which is gathered and prepared by detectives to be subsequently utilized in trial.
To assist detectives in the performance of their duties, our detectives undergo highly specialized training. Such trainings include criminal investigations, comprehensive interview and interrogation techniques, and crime scene processing. This specialized training allows our detectives to apply the highest quality of investigative skill to their criminal investigations.
Furthermore, our detectives are responsible for conducting various forms of background checks. These background checks include pre-employment background investigations for police officer positions in addition to background investigations for our township emergency medical services and fire department. Background checks are also used to investigate special organizations that may wish to use raffle, solicitor, or social affairs permits. Detectives also ensure that all establishments within the township licensed to sell liquor, are adhering and compliant with all Alcohol Beverage Commission mandates.
Finally, the CIU is responsible for the oversight of all persons classified under Megan’s Law. This includes ensuring the registration of offenders and confirming the physical addresses of those individuals.
